Turtlewax #4

Hey! I'm hoping you guys have a good sense of humor, or else I'm liable to get railed for this one. So to help my situation out, I'll attempt to put this one in context a little.

As with the other strips, I drew this one in the Spring of 2000. In the late part of 1999 and early 2000, one of the big news items (especially since it was an election year) was the apparent increase in the number of accidents occurring within the armed forces. In one instance, several people were killed here on American soil in a helicopter crash at a base in the Northeast somewhere.

In the mid to late 90's, Clinton was president and we were 4-6 years removed from the Gulf War. As we all know, the military budget jumps sky high anytime there is a conflict brewing. The same was the case with the Gulf War. So one of the things Clinton did, was make huge cuts to the budgets for the armed forces. Several bases were closed down, and he was trying to reign back some of that spending.

But, and this is my opinion, I think he got a little carried away, and the funding shortfall starting showing up by way of some military personal being released into service before they were fully and properly trained, and that was no fault of their own.

So as politicians do, the Republicans blamed it on the Democrats and the Democrats blamed it on the Republicans, then a year and a half later, 9/11 happened and the funding issues weren't really a problem anymore.

This strip was my attempt to satirize that situation.

Hope you enjoy!
-Jason
